Use the Care Diary app to take a published open shift that you are allowed to see. Some shifts are added to your roster straight away. Others wait for an administrator to approve your request.
You will not see a draft, a shift that has already been assigned, a shift that was not offered to you, or a shift that has already ended. You also cannot claim or request an open shift when your profile is archived or non-compliant.
Find an open shift
Open the Care Diary app. You can tap a notification, or tap Shifts at the bottom of the screen.
Select Open Shifts. The list is for the week shown on the Shifts screen.
Open the shift and check the date, time, participant, and address. Notes and the active or passive hours are shown when the shift has them.
Pick it up or request it
The button depends on the shift settings and your eligibility. For the full rules, see Understanding Open Shift Approvals and Staff Conflicts.
Select Pick Up Shift when you can take the shift immediately. The confirmation asks “Pick up this shift?” and says “This shift will be added to your roster.”
Select Request Shift when an administrator needs to approve it. The confirmation asks “Request this shift?” and explains why. The reason can be admin approval, your maximum hours, a shift already on your roster, or a time you have marked unavailable.
Confirm with Pick Up Shift or Request Shift.
A shift you have already requested shows Requested. You cannot request it again. The shift says that an administrator will review it before it is assigned to you.
If the shift has ended
An open shift that has ended shows that it ended without being filled. Pick Up Shift and Request Shift are not available.
What happens next
Picking up a shift adds it to your roster. Requesting a shift leaves it pending until an administrator approves it and saves the shift. You may receive a notification when a new open shift is available.
